Chain is hitting the front derailleur + Shifting issue.

Hi I have a 2002 OCR3 triple and here are my two questions regarding FD and shifting basically.

1) What should I do to stop the chain from hitting the front derailleur? I kinda looked at websites and youtube videos on HOW'TO fix this kind of issue but I can't make it work on mine? I tried to adjust those two screws on my FD but that didn't solve the issue. I also re-aligned my front derailleur (braze on).

2) My bike is having difficulties to shift properly on the chain ring. I guess that is because the first problem, and when I try to up/down shift the front chain ring, it won't shift at all instead the chain grinds the FD even harder due to more tension to the one side.

Before going to the shop, run through parks adjustment process. Take your time and do each step carefully. If there is still a problem, you can widen the back of the FD cage by removing the smalll screw at the back of the cage. Insert a small washer between the cage plates and put the screw back in. This may buy you the space you need. If all this doesn't do it, stop cross chaining. bk

Are you talking about the chain rubbing the FD cage as you sweep the rear derailleur through the range gears? If so, that's perfectly normal at the inner and outer extremes. What you need to do is a process called "trimming" the FD. That is, you do a partial half-click of the lever in or outwards to do a half-shift to move the FD cage out of the way of the chain. So basically each front-chainring has two positions it can be in so that it clears the chain either on the outside or the inside. Pick the proper position depending upon what gear you're using in the back. It's an extremely rare occurrence of the perfect lever+FD+chain+RD+cassette+frame combination where you can sweep the rear through all the gears without it rubbing on the front derailleur. Probably in less than 3% of the bikes out there.
