Installing a Cassette on new wheel question

Hi i'm building a cheap wheel as an alternative to my main wheel to use on a trainer.

I'm just wondering, do i need a lock ring tool to INSTALL the cassette onto the hub? I have no intentions of removing it, I just want to install it.

With a cassette onto a freehub yes you do need the tool. There's no other way to tighten the locking ring.

Well.... you COULD tap it on using a drift punch and a hammer but you sure won't be doing the freehub bearings and freewheel pawls any kindness. That lockring needs to be quite tight. I only mention this as something NOT to do incase you get the idea that it would be acceptable.

Buy the tool. It'll come in handy at some point if you stick with riding and doing your own work for long enough.

Yep. You'll need the lockring tool, but not a chain whip.
