How to take apart front hub with sealed bearings.

My spare MTN bike Has a set of older Mavic rims and Specialized hubs. The front hub has been making a squeaky noise, so I decided to try to take it apart and repack the bearings. this hub seems to be different than some others I have seen. There was no place for a wrench. There are 2 caps one on each side, that i had to use a tiny screw driver to work off, it seems there is little rubber O-rings that hold them in place. From there on each side it looks like the hub uses a sealed cartridge to hold the ball bearings? What ever it is I have no idea how to get them out, there are no tiny notches to turn them or no bolts to turn. How do I proceed from here?

If you have a sealed bearing on your hub, the usual approach is to remove same by popping off the rubber o-ring - and then measure the sealed bearing for you to replace. Most people wouldn't bother overhauling these - when they start giving you trouble - and simply replace with new ones.

Here's a link to BikeToolsEtc and the sealed bearings they stock. You need an exact copy of what you got, so I hope you have a digital-caliper for measuring.

As for a good digital-caliper, these can cost you $50 most places. Not so with the link below. I have 'em and tested them against my ultra-fancy one. They were exact:

Sometimes all it takes is removing the seal (a scalpel blade or Exacto knife slipped under the edge of the seal will allow you to lift it off), flush with solvent, squirt in fresh grease, and reapply the seal.

Punching the axle out punches the bearings out. Replace them if want to or you can attempt to overhaul them per the above post.

Here is a pic, with the caps off. Sounds like it may be cheaper at that point to just get new wheels.

So they're not an interference fit then?
