double walled rims
Is having a double walled rim much of an advantage? I know it is stronger (generalization) and helps a bit with keeping spokes away from your tube... but does it make a big different or a negligible one?

yes, especially if you weigh more. but it offers more than just strength. they hold their true better and tend to be more stiff which results in more control and response in hard turns. double wall versus single wall is one the biggest upgrades on a bike in my opinion, even bigger if you are a commuter....

Most decent rims will be double walled. |

The last time I saw one - it was on a taco & pretzel salad. I had lot's of fun explaining to people why this wheel/rim was inferior. The owner donated it to my "Rogue's Gallery" museum.

Ten wheels has a set with 36 spokes and they carry his 205 pounds and stuff he rides with quite well. I would guess that the double wall rims will be a little stronger.

I've a single-walled rim on the front of my road bike. Also 36 hole, straight gauge 14s, strong enough for my 145 lbs and stays true as can be.

All you have to do my friend is pick up a single wall rim and a double wall rim with the same size and profile and peferably same manu...and squeeze them both. You'll notice a big difference...that alone will tell you something.
=8-) |
In their defense, they make a wheel that's lighter where it counts most. They can last a very long time. My Super Champions are 35 years old.

yep, super champions 58 were a reliable all purpose rim. Lots of rigida 1320s (narrow box rim) were bent before those were. I had a pair of SC Gentlemans set up on a touring bike. 15g front and rear. Commuting one day in downtown Oakland a 2 1/2" nail when all the way through the tire and rim.
