I have a Shimano 7-speed freehub on one of my bikes from the late 1990's that has a fairly high rolling resistance through about 1/4 of its revolution and the rachet also changes pitch.

I'm assuming it's kaput as I don't think there's any way you can service it.

My question:

I looked on ebay and there are multiple different Shimano 7-speed freehubs such as:

I haven't a clue which one would fit, if either. Suggestions?

Can't offer a suggestion without knowing which hub you have. Also, what cassette range are you using?

BTW, try laying your rear wheel flat on a workbench with the freehub facing up and dribble a bunch of light oil into the seam between the stationary core and the rotating outer shell while turning the cogs by hand. See if that corrects the problem.

Actually, I removed it and immersed it in machine oil while turning and which didn't seem to help.

I don't remember any part numbers or other ID on it. I'll have to check again.

Either of those will probably work. I've swapped freehubs back and forth between 7 and 8/9-speed with few issues. The only trouble I've had is with higher-end hub shells (Deore XT and XTR) not matching lower-end cassette bodies (LX and below). Once you know what hub you're playing with, we'll be able to say with more certainty.
