Bontrager Wheels - How to Tell if Worn Out
Hi all - I have a pair of the Bontrager Race X Lights which I have ridden for a few years. How do I tell when they are too worn out to use any longer? I know there is some sort of wear indicator but don't know how to find it on these wheels or what to look for.

I'm not sure if these rims have a wear indicator or them or not. A rough guide is how concave the rim surface feels when rubbing your finger over it, or take it to your local Trek dealer for a more expert opinion. Even if the rims are worn out, you should be able to get them replaced and keep the hub and spokes - much cheaper than a new wheelset. If the bearings are worn out, then they are probably cartridge bearings that can also easily be replaced. If you just want new stuff for your bike, then sell these wheels on eBay and I'm sure that someone else will be happy to do any maintenance that is needed to quickly get them working like new.

Yes they do have a wear-indicator.
There is a tiny hole on one side of the rim - where the brake-pads hit - and it's coded for the color you see. Very light gray Is new. Darker color means it's wearing fine. Pitch-black means replace.

If there isn't any indicator or already worn out, you should measure the thickness. You can get some info from here.

There is no such hole on the bontrager raace x lites. There is a hole on the side of the rim which is nowhere near the braking surface that is water drainage -> I'm looking at a set right now.
And to answer the OP - the concavity of the braking surface gives you a rough idea of the state of wear.

your rim will probably crack around all your drive side nipples before the brake surface wears too much.
