Sanded out rust- Now what?
I had bubbling in the steel of my Lemond Buenos Aires. I'm not going to retouch.. just need to put some kind of clear coat to protect. Please let me know the best product (s) to use and whether I need to apply multiple coats or sand between coats... Thanks

Use a phosphoric acid etch to prep the bare metal and kill any residual rust, then clear coat.

Is phosphoric acid etch the same thing as an etching primer? Can I buy the stuff at Home Depot or hardware store?
What specific type of clear coat and how many coats? Sanding between coats?
Sorry about all the questions.. As you can tell, I'm clueless

If you're only after preventing the raw metal from rusting again then a couple of coats of boiled linseed oil applied a couple of weeks apart will last for a long time. BLO dries to a varnish like hardness after a few days. But it keeps a certain amount of flexibilty which makes it excellent for bonding to rusty areas and preventing further rust formation.

Look for a rust converter. I've used stuff by Locktight that I got at Walmart. I've used the liquid and the spray paint. For a small spot just put some on a Qtip. If you got all the rust off it will dry clear. If you put it on rust it drys black. I've used it on light surface rust and it stopped the rust completely. I have things that I used this on over twenty years ago that still look good.
