    Quill Stems and measurements

How do you measure the stem length and the steerer tube?
I have a 93 Cdale bike and I think the stem is alittle long for me. I measured it from the middle of the bolt to the beginning of the welding and its 9.5 = 95mm

I was thinking I might be better off with 80mm.

I believe the convention is from center of the bolt to the rear of the bar, very
close to the weld but a lot of stems with threadless are not welded but forged.
Will your seat slide forward 1.5cm? Steve

Not really. Since it's welded, the measurement is center of quill to center of bar clamp along the side of the extension. It's 1" threaded and the quill actually measures 22.2. And, you don't shove the seat forward to get proper reach to the bars.
