Squeaky Avid BB7 disc brakes in the rain and snow

I am sure this has been discussed before, but I think the "search" for these forums is very difficult, I was getting hundreds of pages when I did a few searches for "brakes", "squeaky", etc.

So, what I am wondering is how to adjust (if possible) my brakes so they don't squeak in the rain and snow. The wheel is positioned correctly as far as I know, also, the brakes aren't new, they've got at least 500 miles on them.

Any tips would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Gabe

The pads are probably contaminated.

I would install organic compound pads, either by Avid or Kool Stop, instead of the metallic pads (metallic pads come stock with the brakes). On my BB7's, I found the metallic pads would squeal no matter how much I cleaned the pads and rotors. With the organic pads, the brakes are quiet. The trade-off is the organic pads wear faster.

It's fairly normal for disc brakes to squeak and howl when they're wet.

+1 on organic pads. They don't last quite as long as metallic pads, but they are quieter.

Not acceptable to me. My mountain bike does at least a water crossing or two on pretty much every ride. I'm not going to listen to squealing brakes the whole time. The organic pads solved it for me.

Organic pads OR...

clean and re-burnish your rotors. Most likely you have an uneven buildup of brake pad material on the rotor that is contributing to the noisy brakes.

Do they make ceramic pads for bicycle disc brakes?

FWIW, my BB7's have been noisy when wet since new. They are unbearable loud actually. I have some new pads to install when I get around to it. I hope they quiet things down a bit. I've also read that the stock BB7 rotor contributes to the noise.

Joejack,

Ya, my BB7 brakes are so loud when I brake in the snow that I cringe, dogs start howling, I think windows might even crack sometimes, it's freaking ridiculous how loud they are. They also seemed louder last night in the snow than they do when I ride in the rain, strange.

I think I will stop by my LBS and see if they have these (https://www.blueskycycling.com/produc...ds-Organic.htm). If not I guess I'll order them, I just hate paying shipping costs.
