Sun tour derailer

Just picked up a 1993 Bianchi Premio for FREE. It has a sun tour derailer. Should I change it? Are there
any problems I shoudl expect with this bike? It's pretty clean.

Which Suntour components are they? The Blaze? The Blaze was the bottom of the Suntour lineup which was introduced in 89. I wouldn't change any of it unless there's something wrong with a particular element of the group. the Premio wasn't a great bike by any means that's why the Blaze was used on this bike, to keep the price point down. But free is a great price and you could use it as a daily commuter.

Clean it up. See if it shifts through all the gears. Learn how to adjust the rear-derailleur (RD). If it works - Ride On!

I doubt it's a Blaze on an old Bianchi. May be a VGt, or even a Cyclone. Those can last a very long time. Clean the bike. Perhaps an overhaul. At least a tune-up. If the RD is shot - fear not. Another RD is easily available.

Got pictures?

Bikepedia lists Blaze. Is that usually fairly accurate?

Definitely not Cyclone, VGT maybe; if VGT that's good stuff that will last a long time.

To bad the OP hasn't responded with more details.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

You have it, it's paid for, cleaned up and ready to ride. Why ask opinions when you can find out for yourself?

As to what to expect, that depends more on condition than anything else. My advice is ride the bike, find out you like and dislike about it and replace the dislikes over time as they wear out, or the cash is available.

I'm still riding a Sun Tour commuter equipped bike I built up on a budget years ago, figuring to upgrade later on. Damn thing is nothing ever breaks so I'm still riding the same "temporary" components on this bike.

Asking questions is good. It helps people understand that which was muddy. Ask away!

It probably doesn't matter which model since all SunTour deraileurs perform pretty much the same -- "very nicely" that is. For a free bike I wouldn't bother changing anything yet.

Old SunTours are usually great. There may have been a few odd-ball, limited-run models that weren't so good, but this is probably not one of those. If it works now, leave it alone. If it's a bit sticky, adjust it and clean it.

If you're worried about people making fun of your "cheapo" non-Shinamo/Campy components, or that current SunTour is cheapo, don't worry. ST was at least the equal of Shimano and Campy. They went under because of some bad business decisions, not because they were bad components. (And current "SunTour" stuff is SunTour in name only--which doesn't mean it's bad, just that it's got nothing to do with "old" SunTour.)

This is a classic case of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Suntour components of that era were just a skosh different than Shimano. If you change any of the Suntour components for Shimano you'll find yourself changing everything else one component at a time.

Hmm, with friction shifting I don't think that's a too big of a deal. I have a Shimano 7 speed freewheel and it works great with the Suntour RD. I knew guys who had Shimano downtube shifters with Suntour driveline. I knew guys who had Shimano front derailleur combined with Suntour rear...you get the picture? I knew a lot of guys that had various combinations of components. Granted, this was in the day of friction shifting, I think the problem would exist if you moved into the world of index.

I'll bet you still have a dial phone. The OP clearly states it's a 1993 bike. That says index to me.

Ahh, you derailled me there, but the Blaze has a little dial on the shifter that you can set to either friction or index thus my comments.
