Powertap not working after bearings...

So I had my bearings replaced on my Powertap Pro+. Mechanic took it apart and it took a while to get new bearings and get it back together. There was some confusion, he said, on what side the thrust washer went on, but he swapped it around and it spins fine.

Only problem, no data is transmitting. Did the batteries die when the axle was out? What should I check?

I'm using a Garmin 705, and I've powered it on and off, and rescanned repeatedly.

I'd be hitting up the shop to fix it free of charge.

So would I but it seems your shop is not really familiar with Powertap hubs so that may not help.

Try contacting Powertap directly and check their web site to see if there is a technical document with an "exploded view" of the parts sequence.

Saris recomends returning the hubs to them for bearing replacement, since it possible to damage the power sensing parts. If those got damaged, Saris will have no sympathy with that problem.

Yes, this is what I found in the online manual. I cross posted in the Road forum and another person said they have changed their bearings without a problem. I'll call Saris on Monday and work it out with the shop. I'm sure they will take care of it, I have a good relationship with them. And yes, the shop doesn't know much about powertaps.....

That's not surprising. Powertaps are specialty items and very expensive so the average LBS will probably not see one a year, if that.

Yep, they don't see them, except online they have them for sale. They were trying to do the right thing. I had killed one of the bearings cleaning with Simple Green. No more Simple Green. They did build the wheel for me and it needed to be rebuilt, original rim had a flat spot....

Called Saris. Do not try to replace your bearings. Gotta send the wheel in to them.

My wheel will need a repair, $300.00 estimate.

I took it to the shop and they say they will take care of it for me. They didn't think the warning about bearing removal was real.

Only if your shop blows ass.

Powertaps, srm's, quarq power meters are standard fare for a mid-high end road shop . Powertaps are no longer rare or special. We see them all the time. Market penetration for these devices is only going to increase as the price drops. It's invaluable for traning.

I saw two powertaps, 2 srm's and a quarq roll out the door today and I wasn't even paying attention

You must work in a VERY high end shop to see that many $$$$$ powermeters a day. I expect the average LBS won't see that many is six months. There are a few shops that manage to cater to carriage trade customers but not too many.
