    Maillard 600 Hub Quality

    I found a mangled-up front wheel in my apartment complex trash bin. It says Maillard 600 "sealed bearings" on the hub and the rims says Wolber Super Champion Alpine 27". The rim is pretty bad, but the hub and spokes seems to be still in excellent shape.
    I'm just wondering if its worthwhile to rebuild this wheel for touring applications. Is this a good quality hub?
    As a side question..what touring rims would you recommend for loaded touring?

    Never been a fan of the Helicomatic stuff.
    The 600 was second to top-of-the-line, I believe. The 700 Professionel was the race quality one above it.

    Oh, it doesn't say Helicomatic anywhere.

    I'd throw it back. Serviceable -- typical axle, typical bearings, typical strength -- but nothing special.

    For touring rims:

    Mavic A719/T520 are very tough.
    Mavic A319 is a less expensive alternative.
    Sun CR18 are a little narrower but strong and inexpensive.
    Sun RhynoLites are wider but still cheap.
    Velocity Synergy
    Velocity Dyad
    Alex Adventurer (believe this is what Surly uses in their built up LHT.

    I have a set of T520s and a set of CR18s -- both in 700c.

    I think any of the above rims ccan be used to make nice, tough, and durable touring wheels.

    It's definitely not a Helicomatic. Helicomatics do not have sealed bearings and they are not 600s. The 600 was a good hub. The pros preferred the cup and cone 700s because they were thought to have less friction. I think it would be a perfect hub for touring. You can put fresh cartrige bearings in it and make it good as new for little money.

    I think I'll use it for my first wheel build. I just have to hunt for am affordable 700c rim in Craigslist.

    Now time to search wheel build topics.

    Rather than search for a rim on Ebay, why not buy a rim from a shop? I bought a couple CR18 rims from Treefort in Ypsilanti for a good price and shipping was reasonable -- less than any Ebay seller ever offers. There are a bunch of other internet sellers who offer good prices as well. Or, ask your LBS for a decent price on some rims and see what happens.

    I'm not against Ebay -- I love Ebay. It's just that when I went looking for a couple rims, I couldn't find an Ebay seller within 30% of what I paid.
