The adapter slides clean through both holes. Looking closer even a shrader valve has a bit of room to wiggle around. Doh.

That is the next step - but all in good time. Just irked that the fancy AL option failed.

Bikes: I never learned to ride a bike. It is my deepest shame.

I like the idea of drilling to beable to use both tubes, but I don't want a weakend rim either.

Thanks in advance!
I am sure there is some loss of strength with the larger hole - i'd say it depends on the rim if it will be a problem... more likely a problem with super narrow racing rims than on 22mm wide touring or hybrid or MTB rims. Rims are not reinforced or otherwise changed when they are drilled for schreader - they juat have a slightly larger hole.

Also, I can not remember ever seeing a rim that failed at the valve hole, presta or schraeder.

If you do enlarge your presta-sized holes, consider using a hand reamer. Harder to muck things up royally compared to using a drill.

Thanks!
I have a 27" touring wheelset that came out of a vintage Trek 520. I think I'll have them drilled.

I have a pair of Schrader drilled rims which are too narrow to take the Presta rim hole adapters I have tried. I have installed a pair of Silca 2220 Schrader to Presta adapters on my Schrader valve tubes. These are adapters which are opposite to normal as they adapt a Presta pump head to work with Schrader valve tubes. They have their own valve assembly built in and when screwed onto a Schrader valve tube they depress the Schrader valve assembly so that the valve in the adapter becomes the active one. I have installed them and just leave them on the tube stem. They have worked fine so far.
