1999 Raleigh R700 - compact crank

I am new to the forum and hope to get some specific help. I am wanting to switch for a compact crank for the double standard on the R700. I am NOT a bike mechanic - my question will prove that!! I want to install a compact crank for the std. double on the R700. After visiting my LBS, it seems that there are so many variables involved in identifying what crank/bottom bracket will work, if any at all.

Does anyone have specific experience making this switch on this bike that can tell me what to shop for on the net?? I assume that the front derailer will work ok, but need adjustment. I intend to stay with the 9-cog cassette in back. Any issues with rear derailer or chain that I need to consider??

Thanks for any help!

The only thing you need to know is the BB shell threading. Measuring it accurately or searching for markings on the current bb cups will tell you this. 68mm for the shell is 99.9% english. 70mm is italian. It's probably english. Once that's done all you need to do is select the crank. The bb will be spec'ed for it. The rest is just shortening the chain and readjusthing the front derailleur. Some derailleurs will not be extremely compatible with compacts - just look at the curvature of the f.d. I assume you're running indexed left shifter?

Choose the crank you want; let the LBS do the rest.
