Click..Click..Click.. Driving me nuts

I have an '04 Specialized Expedition Sport. The last couple days of riding have introduced a very annoying clicking sound. It sounds like the left pedal is hitting on something whenever it's at its apex. I've looked and it's not even close to hitting anything. This didn't happen for the first week I rode the bike, just in the last couple of rides. No clicking when coasting or at any other point in the pedals travels other than the apex of the crank rotation. What should I be looking for?

Thanks in advance.

I have some easy suggestions.

1. I assume you have a clipless mount. Take your foot out and pedal. If the noise stops, the problem is in your toe clip or clipless mount. Lubricate and adjust it if possible, and see if that stops it.

2. Take some lube and lubricate the pedal shaft where it rotates just outside the crank arm. That may do it also.

3. Make sure nothing is hitting during your pedal stroke, including the back of your shoe.

If none of that works, you may have to check the bottom bracket next. I am sure one of the better mechanics on the board can refer you to the proper procedure to do so.

Good luck.

There are several sources a click or creak. See also http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/...queaking.shtml

also, check for a kinked or flexed link in the chain... watch the chain closely as you rotate the crank through revolutions and see if it's binding as it goes through the idler pully or the cassette...

Stand on the pedals and see if it persists. If it doesn't, it could be a loose seat or seatpost.

Turned out to be the chain. I don't have a kickstand or clipless pedals. Thanks for all of the suggestions!!
