Cheap Bike is Eating Bearings

Two years ago I bought a cheap kids bike from Walmart. I rode it with no problems whatsoever until two weeks ago when someone took a hacksaw and cut off one side of the crank . I got new crank set off of an old bike I had laying around and put them on. I rode the bike 3 miles to a friends place and back and then the next night I rode it 6 miles and when I got back I noticed a small piece of metal sticking out from underneath the cone. Today I disassembled the crank set and found that the bearing casing had disintegrated. I replaced the bearings with brand new ones, thinking that I had put the bearings in wrong before. I put the crank set back together and rode the bike 1/2 a mile then I noticed a grinding sound. I returned home and took apart the crank set again and again the bearing casing was all shredded up. I have no idea what is happening and would really appreciate it if someone could provide me with some insight into what may be happening.
Thanks
Caleb

did you put in new cups and cones or just new bearing balls?

If you put in new cups, cones, and bearing balls, then improper adjustment would cause early failure.

Just speculating, If you used a bearing retainer, odds are you put it in upside down, if loose balls, possibly one too many.

Guessing caged balls were put in backwards. Can't do that with loose balls

I had a Next 26" and replaced the crank with a Redline. That was a good fix.

Then the rear hub went kaput and after seven months of STUFF I made the correct fix.

I bought a semi-rusty Western Flyer for $25 down the street. Best fix yet, although it got stolen and I bought my Rollfast to replace it. I hope your hardware isn't as bad.

well, these guys have their theory and it might be right, but still, google up some images of pitted bicycle bearings/cups/cones. You might need new ones. If you had metal fragments coming off the bearing retainer, they could easily have ruined your cups and cones.

If those have started to crumble there's no stopping it, you need new ones. The pitting should appear on the track the balls ride in. It will be on the bottom on the cups pressed into the frame, but can be anywhere on the cones, but will usually be 90 degrees ahead of the crankarm.

Thanks for the replies guys. I only replaced the bearings. I looked up some images of the correct installation and I think I put the bearings in backward.
Thanks
Caleb

Huh. Wouldn't the cranks have been stiff as buggery with the cages in backwards...? They pretty much only want to fit in one way, in my experience. BTW, I don't think I've ever seen one-piece cranks with loose balls; that'd be a total PITA to assemble.

And O_O @ someone cutting off a crankarm. That seems pretty random.

The bearing cages on this bike are symmetrical so they fit almost the same way whether they in there backwards or not. The guy that I suspect of cutting the crankarm is a kid that goes to my school and he is known to be a real jacka$$. He is now in trouble with the law for some of his stupid actions. Anyways I put the new bearings in the right way this time and they seem to be working fine.
Thanks
Caleb

Ok well I rode the bike after school today and it rode great but I noticed a grinding sound, so I returned home and disassembled the crank set yet again. The bearings on the opposite side of the sprocket were fine but the bearing cage on the sprocket side were kind of scratched up. I removed them and found a gouge in the cup so I went ahead and replaced both cups and I'm gonna give it another shot. I found some helpful illustrations online and I have reassembled the crank set according to those.
Thanks
Caleb

I've busted myself up pretty bad trying to do stuff with this bike that I should leave to the pros.

Ya a kid at my school got kinda pissed off at me and cut about half way through the crank arm. I didn't notice it until I was riding the 5 miles home from school, I stopped at an intersection and when I stepped on the pedal the crank arm broke the rest of the way.

I just got back and the bike is riding great! The crank set isn't making any more noise and its turning really smooth. Thank you everybody for the help.
Thanks

I hope you took all the play out of the cranks and gave them a slight preload when you adjusted the bearings.

Uhhh.... You are using grease - lots of grease, aren't you? Not just WD-40 or motor oil.

Oooo. That's one pimpish bike!
