sRAM 8 spd derailleur compatible with Shimano shifters
8 speed SRAM derailleur on a MTB with Shimano thumb/index finger shifters. Are they compatible? I was working on a friend's bike and I had no large and small cogs. When I got the large cog, I lost 2 small cogs.

I guess you're trying to operate a SRAM 1:1 ratio derailleur with a Shimano shift lever. It won't work. Shimano derailleurs and shifters use a 2:1 ratio, so the Shimano shift lever is only moving the cable half as much as the SRAM shifter would.

What markings are on the SRAM RD? If it is branded as "ATTACK" or "MRX" then it should work being that these were designed with Shimano in mind. If they are branded as "3.0", "7.0", "X-7" or any other numerical type of branding then they can only be used with the compatible SRAM shifter.
