Cracked Crown Race seal/ring thing
Hi guys, quick question. I was cleaning my mountain bike the other day and noticed that the plastic crown race seal (CC Tank-2 headset) is cracked, and several little chips are actually gone (probably from a recent endo).
I wouldn't be concerned about it except for the fact that I can actually see the exposed bearings through the notches, so I'm assuming dirt and grit will eventually get in there.
1) Is this something I should replace ASAP, or can I let it slide till the next time I service the headset
2) Does anyone know if it's possible to just buy the seal, or do I need a whole new crown race?

On a road bike, I'd say you have some time to get it replaced, but for offroad you really want all the seal you can get, and even that isn't enough.
If the upper and lower seals are the same, switch the better one to the lower stack where it's needed most until you can get a replacement, but don't put it off and sacrifice the headset.

*sigh* I kinda knew that was coming. Can LBS's order individual parts from Cane Creek, or am I going to have to buy a new race?

Cane Creek is very good about parts. They produce in NC so have every part on the floor. The problem is that many dealers are unwilling to bother for a niggling item.
