What crankset(s) can be used for BB30

Hi, I'm new to the forum and somebody recommended to post this question here.

I bought a 2009 Cannondale Supersix with BB30 shell.
I'm confused as to what crankset I can use. I have seen listed on ebay some SRAM red and Force ones that include the BB30 option bearings. So, can I use any crankset like SRAM or Shimano Ultegra per say and just specify or make sure to buy one with BB30 specific bearing cups?

If I recall correctly, the Cannondale BB30 bottom bracket pretty much just consists of cups for the bearings. So, if your crankset includes bearings, that's enough. But, the bearings need to be pressed into the bottom bracket- I'd have the LBS that sold you the frame do it 'cause it's easy to get the bearings wonkus if you try to do it yourself- there's a special installation tool. Plus they need the right number of shims and a warpy washer.

I believe that most any BB30 standard crank will work. I have an FSA carbon compact crank on mine.

I see. I guess any crankset will work then as long as I get the bearings with it.

Thanks
for the info/help

As long as the crankset includes bearings for use with BB30 bottom brackets then yes, it will work. However, that limits you to a pretty small selections of cranks. You can fit any crank to a BB30 frame but you will need the press fit adapters to allow standard bottom bracket cups to screw into the frame. You would also be losing the benefit of the BB30 standard which is the 30mm crank axle, versus 24mm for a normal external bearing crank.

You can get the bearings separately, too. Original Cannondale bearings are purported to be the best, even for another maker's crank. And not all that expensive. But I don't know of a source for the shims and washers; make sure your crank comes with those, at least.

Good luck!

I don't think this is the case at all! SRAM and FSA make BB30 cranksets.... I believe they have different specs completely. If it were just the bearings, they wouldn't have BB30 cranksets. In order to use "any crankset" you'd have to get an adapter. I believe the primary difference is in the spacing.

You have two choices.

1. Get a BB30 crank from SRAM, FSA or Cdale.

2. Get an adapter for your frame. There are two styles of this adapter. The first from FSA or Cdale presses into the frame and allows you to install standard BB bearings. The other is from Wheels Mfg and allows you to use BB30 bearings with most standard cranks.

You will not be able to just pick any crank and mount it in the frame without one of the above. Shimano and Campy do not make a BB30 crank.
