Will this chain tool work for 9 and 10 speed Shimano/KMC chains?
Need a tool for touring and that has a 9 speed drive train while my road bike has a 10 speed. I use KMC chains on both, so will this tool work for both?

I'm a fan of the Park CT-5. It's definitely 10-speed compatible.
That Topeak one is a model that they no longer make, I believe. So its compatibility with newer chains is in doubt. |
Thanks, just ordered the Ct-5. Will that at least handle 9 speed as well as 10 speed chains?
|
Sure. It's 8, 9, and 10 speed compatible.

Either (or almost any) chain tool can be used to cut 8, 9, 10 and 11 speed chains, but splicing them requires using wither a link, or special replacement pin, depending on the chain.

Thanks guys. For joining, I am carrying spare KMC missing links.

Note that you will need to exert a fair amount of effort to remove the pin with a CT-5 on a 10 speed KMC chain. After I did this for the first time to size a new KMC chain, I wondered how in the world this chain could ever break! |
