I have a Mavic Open Sport/105 wheel that I use for commuting and I'm kind of disappointed with the hub. I've only had the wheel since October, but the freehub already skips sometimes when I stand up in the saddle to accelerate. It has definitely seen some rain, as I live in Oregon, but I was noticing that the Deore freehub on my GF's Long Haul Trucker is so stiff that it moves the cranks sometimes if you push the bike along by hand. Does my freehub need a good cleaning? Are mountain hubs really that much more robust? And finally, is it possible to replace my 105 freehub body with a freehub from the mountain family? I don't really care how much it weighs, or how noisy it is, I would just like something more reliable.

Are your chain and cassette also relatively new? If they are well worn then they could cause the problem you described instead of your freehub. There are some differences between MTB and road hubs, but I wouldn't be surprised if the same freehub was used for some MTB and road hubs. If you been riding the wheel through the winter on a lot of dirty roads then taking the freehub off, trying to clean it out and regrease it may help a little, but I'd be surprised if it needed that after just 6 months. If there is a problem that is not due to excessively fast wear and is more of a defect then you may be able to get it replaced under warranty (I'm pretty sure Shimano gives a 1-year warranty on most 105 parts).

Hmm, it may be the cassette, I'll check on that. Also, it's worth noting that the axle is not entirely straight and I can see the cassette wobbling a bit if I look closely. Not sure how that one happened - I'm only 125 lbs and I don't do crazy stuff on my bike, but I'm sure that doesn't help. Thanks for the advice!
