discs brakes with STI shifters?

Hi - I'd like to upgrade my cross bike to disc brakes, bit still retain my Ultegra STI shifters (I use my bike as a road/touring bike and like the Cross geometry). I've read that STI levers don't give the same pull, meaning that disc brakes are essentially ineffectual. Have there been any advancements on this setup? Any advice most helpful! Thanks, PB

Many road tandems use standard brifters with disk brakes. Ours has a 10spd DA working fine with Avid BB7 rear disk. Can't speak for other combos, but Santana's
proprietary disk works with Shimano road brifters.

As stated above, there ARE road-specific disc brakes (I have a set of Avid BB7's on my CX bike). They work great in all weather conditions - as well as in mud or snow. Highly recommended.

For clarification:
The Avid BB7 (and BB5), each come in *two* versions:
- One for Road
- One for Mountain

Be sure you get the correct version for the brake levers you will be using.

Thanks heaps to all. Have found those options. Next question - do people use 140 rotors on the front? or is this mental? I don't see the need for 160's for road riding? PB

All of the road systems I've come across use 160mm front rotors (both Avid and Shimano). That's what I use (Avid BB7).

Incidently, what kind of brake do you have on that tandem's front wheel?
