Crank spider/chainring spacing question
Is there any difference between 5-8 speed cranks and 9 or 10 speed cranks in terms of the width of the aluminum tab that sits between the chainring bolts? I have a 10-speed SRAM S300 crank that I'd like to use with 7-8 speed chainrings (I started a thread last week about 9 speed Shimano with this crank, but I realized that I have a box of parts I could maybe use instead), and I just wanted to know if it would work. Will the spider put those rings too close together, or are most spiders pretty much the same so not a problem in practice? Seems like I read something by the late, great Sheldon that suggested there was no difference in the spacing at the bolts, but that the rings themselves are designed to do the spacing part.
