I've had good success with the sram 8 speed chain on 6 and 7 speed freewheels, but I don't know if the 8 speed chain will work with a 9 speed derailleur. It will be friction shifted, if that makes a difference. Here is what I'm looking at:

Thanks

So you think it'll work? I love hacking together random parts for some reason.

Sounds like me. 8-speed chain through a 10-speed derailleur on a 7-speed cassette. Works perfectly.

An 8 speed chain is the same chain for 5-8 speeds. A 9 speed RD means only that it is capable of indexing 9 speeds. A RD has no brains, it shifts as well as the user(friction) or indexing shifters.

There's nothing odd about it.

It will work fine.

Ditto. It worked for me- it even indexed!

(Whoops- previous edition used a 9-speed Ultegra derailleur with 8-speed chain and 7-speed hub. Whatever.)
