    Crankset Question

I've been using an old Schwinn World Sport to cart my 19-month-old son around, and I recently replaced the rear tire (the rims were rusted and the old tire weighed a ton). I chose a track wheel with a flip flop hub and picked up and 22 tooth cog (I'd been riding 52/22, poor man's singlespeed style, which was working for me). I put the new wheel on and doh! - the chain is so old and stretched that it won't work on the new cog. And I assume that a new chain won't work with the old chain ring.

I'm only putting 4 or 5 miles a day on this bike, so it's not all that important that the chain line be perfect, but I'd like to keep my gear ratio, which means a 52 tooth chain ring. The cranks I have now are Shwinn Sakae, and the crank is attached to the chain ring in a way that seems permanent (so I can't just swap out the chain ring for a new one). Anyone know of a single speed crank set with 52 teeth? Or is there a simpler fix?

I'm having trouble getting past the fact that you're planning on carting around a 19-month old kid on a fixie.

A new chain should work with an old chain ring unless the ring is really worn but is the new 22T cog designed for a 1/8" or 3/32" chain? Are you running fixed or freewheel?

    After checking with Sheldon http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/fixed-sprockets.html
maybe the answer is you need a new 3/32" chain.

Depends on exactly what kind of cog you have.

Thanks JanMM - the cog is 1/8" (looks like a Surley knockoff) and I'm running a freewheel. I'll guess I'll start by trying a new chain - would you recommend 1/8 or 3/32 in this case? I'm guessing 1/8 assuming it will work with my old chainring...
