Difference 9 & 10 speed chain rings

A friend converted his new bike from a 9 spd to a 10 spd. He changed from Tiagra to Ultegra, changing the shifters, front & rear derailleurs, and the chain. He did not change the crank or chainrings but the bike runs and shifts fine. A friend gave me a new crank and chainrings and it said 10 speed on it so evidently there is some difference between a 9 spd and a 10 sped. What is the difference between a 9 spd and 10 spd chainrings? Are the chainrings thinner metal or are they closer together?

When Shimano and Campy went from 8 to 9-speed they narrowed the chainring spacing slightly to accomodate the narrower chain. However in the change from 9 to 10-speed, the concensus it the chainring spacing is so close to the same that the cranks can be used interchangably. (Pun not intentional but unavoidable )

This may not be the question you asked, but...

There will be more of a difference between Tiagra and Ultegra rings than between 9-speed and 10-speed. When you replace chainrings (rather than whole cranksets), stay with rings that Shimano makes as interchangeable. (on the parts lists)
