SRAM TruVativ GXP Team Bottom Bracket and Spacer dilemma.
Hello, I have done a lot of reading online and searched all over this forum but still cannot come to a satisfactory conclusion. I am going to be installing a Sram Force Crank with Sram GXP BB. The manual that came with crank and BB show that if you have 68mm (use 2X1mm spacers) and if you have 73mm (don't use them). While doing some online research I found a lot of people who, when installed spacers and tensioned non-drive crank-arm to right torque weren't able to more the crank because they got stuck. Some said that the spacers are only to be used in mountain bike applications only, and that you wouldn't use them on road bikes. What makes it even more confusing is that manuals that I received with my crank and BB show spacers and all the manuals on Sram and TruVativ website do not.
Please help.
Thank you
Please help.
Thank you

Follow the manufacturer's instructions. They know what they're doing.

The SRAM road BB is the same as the Truvativ MTB BB. They made a mistake by including the MTB BB instructions in the road BB box. Road bikes have 68mm BB. The road crank spindle is designed to match the 68mm standard. They make one crank length for MTB. It is designed for the 73mm standard. In order to make up the difference they include (2) 2.5mm shims to widen the 68mm to 73mm. The SRAM website sucks. They do not have an email address for tech support. Kinda old school...

Got a little bit more replies from the cervelo forum on this problem so check it out if you need some more info on this:

You don't need the spacers. I had the same issue on my 2010 SRAM Force GXP BB. You really have to torque the hell out of it. I, honestly, removed the left crank arm and torqued it down about 8 times to get the play out. Now, it's solid.
A 19" Husky Torque wrench from home depot will do you some good and a Park Tool BBT-19 tool. The longer the torque wrench the better. Make sure you get the right adapter nut for the BBT-19 tool. I'd take both tools in to an Auto Parts store or to Home Depot to make sure you get the right adapter.

Yep, I just encountered the same problem with my Truative GXP BB. I'm so glad to have found this thread. I didn't need to torque the non-drive crank beyond the recommended ~50nm, but then again, I don't have the pedals installed yet, so we'll see.
In researching the problem I've read that this BB is pure ****. People are having problems after just 500 miles. I'm glad they make the BlackBox ceramic bering Red BB now. I really like these cranks and would hate to give them up over a crappy Truative BB.

In this case, the Manufacturer's instructions really are dead wrong with regard to the spacers. They simply aren't needed for 68mm bottom bracket shells. I wish SRAM had a twitter account so I could complain in 140 chars or less.
