    threaded Headset Removal? Also threads broken.

    Well im going to powder coat my bike orange, they said i must take out my headset. How do i take it out. Also my threads are like crushed. when i took it out to check my bearings. i also found a big gash on where the bearings ride on the rings. should i replace it?

    My bike was using cantilevers. Where can i get and what are those things that hold the cable housing and place force on the cable.it was also a spacer.

    I am going to use Cantilevers Again.

    The answer to your first question is: Take the bike to a bike shop and have them remove the headset. Also have them install a new one after the frame has been painted. What "threads" did you crush? On the fork steerer or the headset cup? If it's the fork see if the bike shop can clean them up. If the damage is bad enough you may need a new fork.

    The "cable hanger" is available from many sources, probably including the bike shop I recommended above. You can get them mail-order too. Here is one source:

    Absolutely agree with the previous post. By the time you post numerous questions here, buy the required tools, remove all the headset parts, figure out the correct replacement, reassemble it and most likely find out you've done something wrong during the process you will have a huge number of hours invested and some money spent on tools you may never use again. You are better off taking it to a shop.

    What do you mean by a "gash"? Is the bearing ring split or is the track where the balls run pitted or deeply worn to a ditch like shape? Any of these means you need a new headset.

    Not sure what you mean about your threads being "crushed" either. That would imply that they were cross threaded. But sometimes steer tube threads are not the best looking threads either. The true check is how well the headset threads on and off the steer tube. If it's rough and stiff to turn on the threads and if it seems tilted to the tube then it's cross threaded. And that means you would be best off to look at a new fork. And if the headset is messed up anyway by a split bearing race or damaged track on a race then this would be a good time to go with a threadless replacement setup.
