going to build MTB wheelset....lacing patterns?
i have a nice set of hubs and rims, want to order some spokes. im having a tough time deciding what style spoking pattern to use.
currently im thinking about a radial front wheel, and for the rear wheel non-drive side radial/drive side 3x.
any opinions? will lacing radially sacrifice durability for aesthetics? ive seen MTBs before with this setup, are there any downsides to it?
a little info about the bicycle that may matter:
double wall rims
hadley hubs
rigid fork
linear pull brakes
so whattaya'll think?

3x all the way around. No good reasons to do radial unless you value looks over function. Many hub manufacturers won't warrenty their hubs if you radial lace. Check the book "The Art of Wheelbuilding" for a vets explanation.

It's hard to beat a 3x lacing pattern. Riderx is correct about radial spokes and hubs. There is less material to take the stress of radial spokes which could cause the hub to fail.
Never use radial spokes on a rear wheel. There is too much hub wind up required to deliver torque to the rim.

3x is one of the best patterns to use for a MTB. www.sheldonbrown.com has a great wheelbuilding article that I found quite helpful when I built my first wheel.

Unless you are incredibly light and your tires never leavet the ground, forget about radial lacing. Looks good, not very strong. Forget it for the rear wheel.
Three cross is the most reliable, and durable lacing. Four cross puts the spokes at too much of an angel and covers over the adjacent spoke hole causing unusual wear and problems with replacing spokes.
I'd ONLY go 3x, especially for a mtn bike!
The bigger question is straight gauge or double butted spokes.
Then there's the debate of brass nipples vs. aluminum.

Radial only saves a couple of greams any way. Back in the day i built a ultra light hub radial and the bearings, it was a cartridge hub, got loose. Seems the spoking was pulling the hub apart!
