Dura-ace 9-speed bar end shifters 7700?

These have the little D-ring adaptor on the shifter which allows the rear shifter to be used in friction mode.

The 10-speed dura-ace bar end shifters do not have the friction option on the right/rear shifter.

If i have a bike with complete 105 triple drivetrain 10-speed, can I swap out the 10-speed brifter/shifters for these 9-speed bar ends, use the friction mode, and be good to go leaving everything else as is?

The only thing I can think of is the 10-speed chain might be too narrow if I swap out the 10-speed cassette for a 9-speed (for wider gear range)??

The 9spd shifters in friction mode will work fine on your 10spd drivetrain.

The 10spd chain will work fine on your 9spd drivetrain.

7800 series barend shifters (10spd) do have a friction mode. 7900 series barend shifters (10spd) do not have a friction mode.

Bikes: I never learned to ride a bike. It is my deepest shame.

What a bad decision on the part of Shimano.

Yeah, they're all sold out of those 7800s--nobody's got them.

I can get 8-speed ultegra barends cheaper than the 9-speed da--they would also work on 10-speed system in friction mode, right?

Sram and Campy barend shifters in friction mode would also work, right? Assuming they have a friction mode.

Wow! You're right. I just bought a set 2 months ago and they were in stock at many places.

As for your question on SRAM and Campy working, I'm not 100% sure. I would think Campy would work if it does have a friction mode, but I'm not sure about SRAM because they have a different actuation ratio. You may need to use a SRAM RD.

Help me out here

OK, so I'm ordering

Shimano HG-50 9-Speed 11-34T MegaRange Cassette AND

Shimano SL-BS77 9-Speed Double/Triple Bar End Shift Levers

with the understanding that I can just replace only the shifters and cassette on my 10-speed system and I'm ready to fly with mtb low gears (I already have an XT long cage rear derail back there), right?

I don't need any spacers to put on the freehub body? As I understand it, I just leave off the 1mm spacer that's on there already, and everything fits like a hand in a glove, right? just like it always works with bike stuff

and then when I want to use my regular 10-speed cassette, I just put the shifter into friction mode, right? this seems too easy

Actually i found a few places that still have them--you have to google
SL-BS78 .

I decided to go with the 9-speed, though, since I found them on sale at Niagara for $50 and the 9-speed 11-34 cassette is only 25. If i go with the 10-speed, it's $100 and either $133 for IRD 10-speed 11-34 cassette or wait yet another month for the new Shim mtb 10-speed cassettes which would be $50 minimum and might not work.

Clark, it sounds like your plan of 9spd MTB cassette with 9spd barend shifters will work. Then use friction mode with 10spd cassette. I don't see any issues with it.
