no spinnin' wheel
My back tire on my road bike does not spin freely. I spin the front tire and it will go for 30 seconds or a minute. When I spin the back tire it goes for 5 or 10 seconds. This was discovered after changing a flat on the back tire. I hear or see no rubbing on the fender though there is resistance somewhere. Do you have any ideas where I may start to resolve this issue?

Well it will never spin for as long as a comparable front wheel because of the drag from the freehub.

Need more information - type of bike, age, number of gears, freehub, freewheel or internal hub, etc. That will help to diagnose the problem.

Start by taking off the wheel (not tire - that's the rubber only). Twirl the hub in your fingers. It should rotate easily with no gritty or grinding feel. Then try to move the end up and down (crosswise to the way it rotates). Assuming it's a q/r you should feel a very small amount of play. If it does not pass those tests it needs a hub adjustment, and if it feels rough, an overhaul. Lots of info on Sheldon and Park sites (see READ THIS post at the head of Bike Mechanics). Yes, I have taken the back wheel off the bike and attempted to spin the wheel in my hands. It is difficult to spin, once it gets going there is alot of resistance, a very gritty feeling.

Again, you should spin the axle, not the entire wheel - much easier to check, but it definitely needs an overhaul. Have a shop do it or tackle it yourself if you are willing to buy any tools you don't have and follow the directions to be found in various places - repair manuals, Sheldon Brown's site, Park tool, Google "bicycle hub overhaul."
Just in case - Do you have to overhaul it? No, you can ignore it and it will get worse, eventually needing more parts or an entirely new hub or wheel.

Yes, it is the axel that I rotated where I found a continual jerky resistance. I suppose it should rotate smoothly. Off to the bike shop.
