Slightly bent skewers - does it really matter?

I have some new Campagnolo Neutrons and discovered that the rear skewer is very slightly bent. I only noticed it when unscrewing quickly - I could just about feel the nut opposite the lever wiggling slightly in my fingers, plus you can just about see a slight bend in it.

It's not jamming inside the axle and it's only a means of securing the axle to the forks - no other mechanical function - so does it really matter if it's slightly bent?

I can obviously get a replacement, but I just wondered anyway.

Nope, provided you can adjust it correctly.

Second that, it'll straighten under the tension of closing anyway.

If the end gets bent just carefully straighten it as you insert it into the axle. It will still work but easier to deal with if it does not stick.

How do you suppose it could have gotten bent?

This is a question that usually comes up in reference to older hubs - particularly freewheel hubs. In that case my response is that the QR doesn't matter so much but usually they only get bent when the axle bends or breaks. Then you have to fix the axle. Since you're telling us that this is a new hubset I'm trying to imagine how a QR spindle could have gotten bent.

It's only a problem if it prevents you from sliding the skewer through the axle.

Thanks everyone. Much as I thought - ie. nothing to worry about - but I'll drop by the dealer and swap it anyway.

Bit of a mystery as to why a new skewer (from a boxed/protected wheelset) would be in any way bent... but not one that will keep me awake at night trying to solve!
