Is it safe to lube your pedals?

I have those smarty pedals that are also called "Egg Beaters," and as I ride I keep hearing this annoying clicking sound from my right pedal. And I was wondering if it would be safe to lube down in the center of the pedal where it has that coil looking thing... Do they ever need to be lubed?

Not entirely sure about cleat pedals since I've never used them before, but I do know that the spindle/bearings needs to be cleaned and lubed with a good bearing grease every now and then. They're typically put together just like a hub if they're good pedals and can be adjusted pretty similarly too.

The Crank Brothers Smarty is the cheapest of the CB lineup, and as opposed to most of the other ones they are not rebuildable. Lubing the middle is unlikely to do any good. What you can do is pry the plug over the pedal axle away, and try to get some lube in that way. Don't expect too much though, smarties aren't expected to last that long.

Correction:
Eggbeaters

Smartys

Yes you can clean and lube the pedals.
Are you sure the sound is from the pedal and not the BB or maybe the cleat?
