    6 Speed Cassette Help!

    hey guys, i'm having an issue on deciding what to do and if it's even possible. i have shimano 600 SIS components and it's a 6 speed uniglide system. I have better wheels that i want to use (shimano 105 with Mavic ma2 rims). The rear hub is an FH-1055 which i believe is a 7 speed uniglide. Will i be able to remove the 6 cogs off the ultegra 600 and slap those onto the 105 free hub without any issues?

    I also tried to remove the the cassette by using a chain whip and a jerry rigged chain whip (my brother holding a spare chain around the freewheel while we go opposite directions) and the 13t cog would not budge!

    Any tips would be helpful right about now, cheers!

    I'm not familiar with the parts in question, but is it a cassette, or a freewheel?

    Some of the hubs of that era were freewheel, cassette, or a hybrid sort of setup, what was integrated, but without the classic freehub with a splined cassette. Those sprockets were removed by removing the right side cones, but in any case couldn't be changed to anything else.

    Step one, find out what you're dealing with, then you can consider options.

    Freehub body is different now than it was back then, you need uniglide rather than hyperglide as current is.
    spacers between cogs is thinner for 7 speed than 6, to pack in that extra cog without adding a wider axle too.

    You need 2 chainwhips, not one and someone holding a loop of chain ..


    I put a bit of cheater tube on the end of my chain whips round feels better
    (+ I can brace one against my body while pulling with the other) ..
    the portion of thin chain is attached to the flat steel piece with masterlinks from BMX /wider chains ,
    to eliminate the chains on them coming apart while using the force needed to unscrew things ,

    I tried to put a 7-speed cassette onto a 6-speed uniglide hub. There was about a 1/8" difference in thickness, leaving half the thread of the top cog hanging off the end of the hub. I think they may be a little different. You may wind up with slack. Of course, all you have to do is find the right spacer.

    I don't think that Shimano ever made a 6-speed cassette hub. They stuck with freewheels through 6-speed, and just made the switch to 7-speed freehubs/cassettes.
    The only place this might not apply is Dura-Ace, where they might have made 6-speed freehubs.

    Can you get the lockring tightened to hold the cassette onto the freehub body?

    What I'm trying to do here is to put the 6 speed cassette on the 7 speed shimano 105 free hub. i believe they both are uniglide, so would it just be a matter of spacer combination? I'm not trying to put a 7 speed cassette on a 6 speed free hub.

    Is the six speed hub a Dura-Ace? If so, the top cog won't fit. It had a smaller thread in order to allow an 11T top cog.

    The 6 speed Uniglide cassette cogs should fit on a 7s, if it is a Uniglide, they might even fit on later hubs. If the 6s is too narrow you can use a spacer but the harder issue is that the 6s has a threaded cog in the first position to hold it togther, while IIRC all the 7 speeds had lockrings. Your other choice is to try swapping the whole cassette body from the 6s to the 7s.

    i'm pretty sure it's a 6 speed cassette, though it could have spider cogs on it. it's a shimano 600 hub with indexed cogs and not dura ace. I've found 6 speed cassettes on ebay supposedly by shimano, but don't feel like spending the money for them. i tried to use the lockring tool because there was a splined shape hole inside the hub, but the tool would not fit inside.

    The shimano 105 hub i have has threads on the end of the free hub, so i assumed that the lock ring was the last cog.

    It should work just fine. To get that 13 tooth off you need either 2 chain whips, or try shifting the chain to the largest sprocket while putting the chain whip on the smallest and pedaling forward (pretty ghetto though). But yea, it'll definitely work once you get the cassette off.
