Repairing torn vinyl/faux leather saddles.....

Is there a satisfactory method to repair small tears in saddles?? I've got a bunch of otherwise good seats that have a small tear or punch from a crash. Has anybody devised to way to salvage these??

Thanks for your ideas…..

As a matter of fact, yes. I get these seat covers for $2.87 from Niagara. It goes snugly over the seat. It offers no padding. Instantly, the seat looks better, and no padding will fall off any more.

There was a thread a few months back in the Classic and Vintage forum about how to recover, entirely, a saddle. I'm not sure it's worth the effort, though the results were quite good.

I stock up on good saddles at garage sales and thrift stores. I typically find them in the $1 to $3 range. Even though I have used quite a few saddles over the years, I still have a good selection in hand.

Thrift store and garage sale bikes typically have torn seats. Then in another area, you will often find a good, clean saddle.

I will also occasionally pick up a crappy donor bike just for the saddle, pedals, and grips. My last $2 church sale donor had good wheels, brakes, crankset, handlebar, stem, alloy seat post, etc. You just have to look past the crappy brand/paint/damage/rust/whatever.

who said I passed up that chance?

I was looking for a more presentable method. I'm sure I can fashion a highly durable surface patch that will cover up the damage; but it still has the appearance of a damaged seat. Maybe the cover is the only choice.

I know to stock up on seats/parts when I see them; it just irks my green (cheap) side to pass over a perfectly functional saddle cuz' of a little tear.

But it can make or break a sale........

I should post a picture of a seat with that cover on it. It fits very snugly, and it's difficult to see that there is an add-on cover on it. It looks good!

It has elastic on the bottom. It stretches. It's made of nylon/lycra. Once you put it on, it's taut, and you can barely tell there's something extra added.

If I don't post a picture in a day or two, please nudge me.
