    crooked RD

    Had a new bike delivered yesterday and although it was supposedly tuned up and ready to ride after assembled it was nowhere close, ok, I expected that. After I got it all set up I noticed the probable cause of the terrible noise and shifting issues was the crooked RD. It is a new SRAM Rival, just want to be sure before I get too involved that this is indeed what it is NOT supposed to look like. Every other bike I have worked on, both pulleys are lined up with each other and the cogs, wayyyy off here. Thanks all.

    I guess any advice for what to about it would be good too.

    More likely a bent or poorly attached derailleur hanger than the RD itself, but impossible to tell from here. Looks like the hanger is detachable, perhaps the seller will send you a new one? It looks like the rear wheel is not straight in the stays, perhaps the RD will align better with the cogs if the wheel is in straight?

    You answered your own question. Bend it back. There are specific tools for this or you can take your chances with a screw driver. Frankly, I would get the right tools if possible.

    check hanger alignment. i have not had good luck with rival on new bikes. sometimes i will align the hanger and thread the derailleur back on and it is not straight. i end up just bending it back by eye. was this bike brand new from box with all the factory packaging? if yes then a complete tune up will be needed. rear housing looks kinked too. sometimes on new trek bikes the parts box ends up bending the derailleur hanger, really stupid packaging.

    It was brand new, out of the box. The hanger is detachable, hopefully just replacing that. The wheel is straight, all the way in the dropouts on both sides. Might as well take it in and get it tuned up properly anyways, will just highlight this.
