    Campy shifter/rear wheel questions

Hi I am looking for a trainer wheel to use with my 1up, current setup is a 10spd Centaur shifters with a comp triple up front and comp tripe 10 spd cassette, 13-29. My question is if i bought a 9 spd rear wheel would it work with my 10spd centaur shifters or is the spacing different.

    thanks in advance.

Campy 9 and 10-speed cassettes are spaced differently so 10-speed shifters won't shift a 9-speed cassette properly. Newer Campy "9-speed" hubs also take 10-speed cassettes so that isn't a problem.

Older 9-speed only hubs can be used with 10-speed shifters by adding a Jtek Shiftmate (Model 2 for this setup) to compensate for the spacing difference.

Although Campy 9s hubs and 10s hubs have the same freehub so you could change the 9s cassette to a 10s cassette and not need anything else.

If I remember my Campy lore correctly, older Campy hubs were 8/9-speed compatible but will not accept 10-speed cassettes. Newer Campy hubs are 9/10/11-speed compatible so it depends on what hub the OP buys.

no, older 8s hubs were never 9s compatible. Older/original 9s hubs can be used with 10 cassettes but not 11s. Current freehubs are designed for 9/10/11s.

If you are buying something, get one that will definitely work. If it doesn't say 10sp compatible, stay away. There are plenty of things for sale that you shouldn't buy one that isn't suitable.

Oh, so that's the difference. Thanks for the clarification. I know Campy 8-speed is considered an orphan but I didn't realize why that is so true.

You can use any 10s cassette you want on the second wheel.
