Road triple on mountain bike possible?

Road triple on mountain bike possible?
Question- and forgive me...
Will a road triple crankset, specifically the Sugino XD2 (46,36,24) work on a mountain bike?
I've got an older (2000ish) Cannondale F400 mountain bike that I'm rebuilding for the sake of learning about this stuff. It had a Sugino crankset that is being retired due to excessive wear and I would like something silver instead of the black that most mountain bike cranksets seem to come in nowadays. This bike will not likely be doing any "mountain biking" in the end, just riding around the neighborhood by my wife.

46/36/24 is close to current trekking cranks (usually an outer ring of 46 or 48) that can be used on MTBs.
Get the correct bottom bracket. You may need a slightly longer one than the one listed for it if the crank was intended for road.

Thanks for the input JT, I was planning on getting a wider BB if I went with this crankset (as per something that I'd read on Rivendell). The crankset that came off was a 44,36,24. I have a coworker that calls me a jive turkey about ten times a day.
