Changing cranksets questions

I am considering changing out the cranks on my 2004 LeMonde. They are Ultegra. The guy at the LBS suggested going with a SRAM with shorter cranks (2mm shorter). He was surprised that my current cranks are so long - normally they only put them on a 58 or larger frame (mine is a 55). The thing is, I don't want to do something that will alter the fit or position on the bike and cause any problems. Last year, I made the mistake of changing shoes mid season and really got into trouble with my IT band as a result and that could not have been more than a fraction of a mm difference between how they were set up on the old shoes.

Advice?

I think Ultegra is offered in 165, 170, 172,5 and what you may have , 175.

but the BB type keeps changing, [newest latest thing for the annual trade shows.]

Now the BB bearings, are outside the frame and the axle is a bigger tube..

I assume you either have 175 or 172.5 and the suggestion is to go down one size. The difference, 2.5MM, is a little less than a tenth of an inch. My commuter and MTB have has 175mm cranks and my road bike has 172.5mm cranks. I don't really notice any difference between the two sizes. You will need to raise your saddle 2.5mm to compensate but, again, we're talking less than a tenth of an inch.
