what did I break?

Just got a new Specialized HR ProDisc about a month ago. Everything is stock. Was riding downtown tonight and I hopped onto a set of stairs and banged it pretty hard I guess. The bike sort of tossed me a little and when I hopped off the rear was dragging on something. I undid the QR and tightened it and it unlocked so I rode back to the car. When I got home I noticed that even though the skewer is tight, the wheel wiggles back and forth. I dont mean when it is spinning, I mean when it is just sitting there. It seems to "pivot" somewhere between the cassette and the hub? I really am just learning about this stuff so I appreciate it.

OH BTW, as far as impressions of the bike, I really really like it. Although the saddle is bent to sh** by my 230 lbs. And also the pedal is clicking on the left side. When I come off of it or first get back on it. I am not worried because all this stuff is under warranty of course, I am just wondering if I am going to have to replace these components with better models because they are not built to stand the big guys, instead of just having the LBS replace it with OEM's.

Thanks

CL

Warranties don't cover damage from abuse, hate to say. Sounds like your rear hub could be loose, maybe its shot.

I underlined where the abuse came into play.
  1. Jumping stairs at your weight.
  2. Saddle bent to "****" I weigh more than you do , ride stock Specialized saddles and the ONLY time I ever wrecked one is when I was doing something massively STUPID
  3. Warranty's don't cover abuse. Your FRAME has a lifetime warranty but again ABUSE negates that. The damage described here doesn't happen when you're "Just Riding Along"
  4. Your LBS is under no obligation to give you anything - much less FREE UPGRADES
  5. Last, If you wanted a hucking bike why'd you buy a Hardrock? You'd have been better off on a P-series

In short you messed up your bike. It's YOUR fault the end.

buncha nice folks here. great attitudes, and helpful to boot. So number one,

the bike is not warranted because I weigh 230? Dont think so.

And maybe because you guys didn't bother to ask, I'll tell you I think you are overestimating what I meant by hopping onto stairs. "Hucking" is not in my vocabulary or my skill set, since I can't even bunny hop yet.

And as far as free upgrades, get bent. I never said that. The specialized seat that you say "could never have been bent" unless I was doing something stupid, is in fact, steel rails mounted to a PLASTIC undercarriage. Maybe YOU aren't riding hard enough, right?...

In summary, I cannot BELIEVE that you guys would respond like this to someone, especially a noob, who is trying to enjoy the sport that this site endorses in every post.

Anyone else want to ANSWER my question, instead of taking this opportunity to be a dick?

Didn't say that I said that that it wouldn't be covered due to ABUSE. Again I weigh more than you and yes, stuff does break on occasion but usually not after a month without help.

And maybe because you guys didn't bother to ask, I'll tell you I think you are overestimating what I meant by hopping onto stairs. "Hucking" is not in my vocabulary or my skill set, since I can't even bunny hop yet.We deal with a lot of "Urban" riders here and you expained it exactly as they would. "Just riding along and I hopped a set of stairs"

And as far as free upgrades, get bent. I never said that. The specialized seat that you say "could never have been bent" unless I was doing something stupid, is in fact, steel rails mounted to a PLASTIC undercarriage. Maybe YOU aren't riding hard enough, right?...

Sure doesn't SOUND like it. I also never said it couldn't be I just said that the only time I wrecked one is when Iwas doing something stupid. It's not that I don't ride hard enough it's due to the fact that I know how to ride and (generally) not break my equipment.

In summary, I cannot BELIEVE that you guys would respond like this to someone, especially a noob, who is trying to enjoy the sport that this site endorses in every post. Oh my goodness gracious! Did we hurt your feelings? When you come off like you're going to force your LBS into a warranty issue for abusing your bike exactly how to you THINK a couple of mechanics are going to react?

Anyone else want to ANSWER my question, instead of taking this opportunity to be a ****

Does any of this fall under the category of "personal attacks"?

fine. can either one of you tell me specifically what is wrong with my bike. If not, is there someone reading this that can?

I remember when the internet was useful and informative.

Could be your hub's cones are loose. Could be (more likely) your axle's broken.

Guys... even you will laugh a little at what I saw when I went to find out what hubs I have...

BTW,
Joy-Tech, disc, freehub, 32 hole, ground race double sealed loose ball w/ alloy QR

doesn't sound too promising. I think Im gonna check around the forums for a good clydesdale hub, or a full wheel.

Hey Clancy, I'll second the recommendation for Rhyno Lites and XT's.

Although XT's aren't the greatest hub available, they are a good solid hub for the money. (I'm comparing my XT rear hub (@$54.00) to my Profile Racing hub ($279.00))

From what you describe, you snapped the axle. You probably can't tell from just looking at it.

I'm a big guy too, and I've bent my share of saddles. You'll learn to unweight the saddle when going over the rough stuff and try to ride more standing up. It's a lot more effort, but it'll get you in shape faster and keep your riding style smoother. You essentially use your own suspension (arms/legs) to absorb the impacts.

thanks a2. I think that is alot of the problem. I love to ride but I've never really learned proper techniques, I am just winging it. Looking around to find more of that type of info. Is there a "basic MTB techniques" DVD that I can get?

BTW, took the bike to LBS today and the hub wasn't broke. He took it apart and tightened *something* and it seemed okay, but they are doing a 30 day tune so they have it til Monday. (damn!) Will have to ride the old trek 4300 til it gets back!
