Freewheel range for Shimano 600 shifter

If I change it to friction mode, will my SIS 6 speed shifter have sufficient range to handle a 7 speed freewheel?

Probably. 6-speed and 7-speed freewheels are the same width, with less space between the cogs on the 7-speed. Unless, of course, you have a Suntour Ultra-6 freewheel- but that wouldn't work with a Shimano 6-speed shift lever!

No problem. Going from 6 to 7 may add another 5 mm to the travel under the worst case scenario. That's not an issue for the rear 600 SIS shifter.

Thanks. On a related note, there are many 7 speed freewheels listed on eBay, some of which say they are Hyperglide. Is there a preference among the various models?

Hyperglide was a development of Uniglide, which was superior to Suntour straight-cut freewheel teeth, which were superior to Regina "groove-top" cogs. Uniglide was a great jump over the straight-cut teeth, but Hyperglide wasn't a huge jump over Uniglide (IMO, of course).

Shimano Hyperglide is the way to go.
