The speed of the shifters need to match the speeds of your cassette. So if you have an eight speed cassette, then you will need an eight speed shifter. Spacing is different on 9 speeds.
Are you having any issues with your shifters? I personally ignore on line reviews as they tend to be dominated by people with an axe to grind. Happy customers tend to not post reviews.

If your bike is currently 8 speed, you are going to spend some $$ making the switch: new chain, new shifters, new cassette at a minimum. All because of some on line comments.
