For ultimate reliability, go with some friction (or micro ratchet) shifters. They will shift just about anything and are as rugged as they come.
Otherwise, don't worry about it unless you're heading out into the wild blue yonder. As long as you are within internet and DHL/UPS reach you're never more than a few days away from spare parts.
Hi, Sorry I'm not sure I understand dabac, I would like to change the x.4 shifters which are eight speed, back and front. Could someone recommend what to replace them with and/or confirm that the x.7 9 speed will work?
Also note that the SRAM x line will not work with the Shimano line. If you switch to a Shimano trigger shifter, then you'll have to change the rear derailleur to a Shimano or Shimano-compatible SRAM derailleur. New SRAM trigger shifter should work well for at least 3-4 years under normal condition.
Thank you all, I just found out that I have been reading reviews for the sx4's when I have the x4's - the sx4 was not a true double trigger shifter - panic over, I hope your right and I get a few years out of them.
