What's missing on my SRAM Rival crankset?

I've had my bike for about a month. I noticed today that something seems to be missing on my crankset. I'm not sure if the pics show it clearly, but there is no cover on either side, I can see straight through it. Are supposed to be covers on each side, or am I missing a mechanically significant part?

Looks like an empty hole to me that did not get any light - images like that for companies are not always great for reference because they are there for looking pleasant and not being true-to-life... Unless they decided to do it for Rival only but every Red and Force crankset I have seen had no such plug.

I'm certainly no expert, so I guess you're probably right...just looked funny to me...thanks for helping!

EDIT: you're both definitely correct...I found a different pic that does show it's hollow through...

yeah a lot of cranks are hollow in the center - its unnecessary space because the rotation is happening around it.
