9spd brifter and 8spd cassette

Would it work? Is there a way to lock out the last shift click? Or it is just stupid talk?

That works with a 7400 series DA RD or any other shimano derailleur using the alternate cable attachment. http://sheldonbrown.com/dura-ace.html

Will generally not work, too much difference in spacing.

Upgrade the cassette and chain to 9-speed. The old hub, crankset, and derailleurs will work unless the derailleur is Dura-Ace.

OK, fine. Will generally not work w/o tweaking.

Once you're in the realm of inventive, hands-on tinkering, far more things are possible. If you're sufficiently stubborn it'd be easy enough to custom-cut a Shiftmate for whatever hybrid drivetrain you want.

Shimano 9 has a sprocket pitch of 4.35 mm, Shimano 8 has 4.80 mm. Campy 8 has 5.00 mm and Campy 9 has 4.55 mm. Too much difference for decent performance in stock configuration.
