New shifters and derailleur on old bike
 

Hello everybody,
I joined because I had a question about fitting new shifters and derailleur on a 10 speed (2x5) Schwinn World. The shifters are Sram X5 trigger shifters and the rear and front derailleurs are the corresponding Sram X5 models. I took them all to a bike shop here and they said that the indexing would be off and thus I would not be able to use the combo.

1) Can I use the shifters + derailleurs on my bike without too much modification?
2) If not could I use the derailleurs with the original Suntour steam shifters (they are not indexed)?

Stick with friction / ratchet based shifters and many things are compatible with each other..

You might find another type of friction lever to have the lever somewhere else ,
off the stem..

Ends of the Handle bar, thumbshifters on the top center of the bar ,
you will still be holding on with both hands in those cases
and onto the down tube , a classic racers location when remaining low over the bars for aerodynamics, short cable = quick shifts.

drop the 'let the mech do it for me ' problems , that syncing lever /cable pull,parallelogram translation into lateral motion
and spacing of each cog on rear cluster, thing , Its all gotta be dialed in ,

Whereas with friction shifting it's just a simple motor skill that you do with your hand..
with each shift you make small adjustments.

With your friction shifters you can use whichever derailer you want. (assuming it's got the right cage length)

There is a very good probability that if you put.a 7 speed freewheel on the back you will be able to get them to index properly if the shifters are 8spd shifters.

Google 7 spd mtb shifters. I saw some for 15 bucks, then search shimano 7spd freewheel. They can also be had for 15 bucks. Lastly find out the width of your dropouts depending on how old the bike is, you can just put the 7spd freewheel on with doing anything major.
