What is the purpose of these shift cable connectors?
Just wondering what purpose these things serve that are inserted in the shifter cables where they come off the handlebars?

That's what I thought. I tried turning them and it didn't appear that any adjustment was being made. Do you turn the barrel or the black ends inserted into it? I think I'll leave them off when I replace the cables as they don't seem to serve a purpose for me.

They are inline barrel adjusters from Jagwire. Hold the black end and turn the barrel. I like them they let me easily adjust the derailluer cable tension when the shifting get a little off.

sometimes the ferrule slips. you sometimes have to hold the cable and rotate the barrel to get it to adjust. You can see a shiny barrel inside the textured barrel that will move in/out when you turn it.
