Im brand new to the road biking, and just got back from my first ride on a new Trek 1500...anyway, everything was great, though my rear derailleur was having trouble when i would shift to the smaller gears (high gears right?) Anyway, i did mose of my riding in the middle range of gears so it could have been worse, but the few times that i shifted all the way down to the smallest three or four gears, the chain would skip from gear to gear, and not be able to stay in one place without making that clicking noice when the chain isnt set perfectly on the gear (i got flashbacks to my mountain bike when i was a kid, and shifters didn't click into place...) Anyway, is there an easy fix to this problem that i can do myself without taking it into the shop...id like to get to know how to do these things myself since i plan on doing some touring next year, and would like to be a self sufficiant as possible. Thanks for any help in advance.
You dont have to take it down to the LBS for that... go to http://www.parktool.com and look at their repairment section. There is alot of information there, and honestly, you cant really "learn" how to adjust a cable, you just do it wrong first time and then 2 sec later when you discover that the shifting is even worse then you do it right It aint more difficult then that. But take a look at park tool anyway, it is a good school.
