cant make the rear wheel stay put

Felt Breed single speed with DT Swiss 240s hub, every face is knurled and I am up to 45 ft lbs on a torque wrench, each side.

I am 160 lbs and haven't even raced it yet. nothing more embarrassing than chain slap and stopping to re-hang a fallen chain on a single speed. any recommendations?

the whole reason I choose this track style forkend was to avoid tensioners, eccentric bb's, etc. I guess i am the idiot.

thanks, Dave

Does the axle extend beyond outer face of the dropout plate or outside washer? If so, that's the problem.

From the sounds of his using 45ft-lbs on the nuts I'm assuming he's using a solid axle and nuts instead of a QR skewer.

Boulder, can you see where the axle actually dragged and the wheel ends up cockeyed and jammed into the left side chain stay or does it just drop the chain and leave the wheel still in place?

aluminum rear triangle inside and ss inserts outside. steel knurling

I don't understand your ? reptilezs, how can the axle not not extend past the outside of the ss inserts. there are no lock-washers, or any washer for that matter....sorry.

thanks for both your inputs.

sorry and yes, it's a tappered head 8mm allen head through bolt, no quick release.

the wheel does not skew to one side or another, more or less just forward thus slackening the chain.

That's a good point.

now that it is mentioned, is a lock washer an option? I guess I have never associated that on a wheel. I can remember growing up with my BMX wheels not moving and there is no way I had them near this tight.

How about some of those BMX style chain tensioners to keep it locked in place? They come with some of the cheaper ebay fixed gear bikes for the drive side, but you can get them after market for cheap.

Maybe the track style forkend is not aligned properly?

How about a Horizontal Dropout Chain Tug / Tensioner ?
They can be used on single speeds and fixies.
The MKS Chain Tug and Surly Tugnut are a couple but there's other brands that make them too.

thanks folk, I appreciate the input. I have certainly seen the tensioners but so much of my motivation for the bike was its simplicity and lack of fiddly-bits. having said that, I don't like a slack chain either.

when I said that 'all surfaces were knurled' that wasn't quite true. the ss inserts which face outboard are smooth. I think I'll look for an aftermarket piece that comes in anything but smooth or at least buy another set and rough them up myself.

cheers
