Stick with 36H rims. I prefer to build with straight gauge (+/-0.001" axially and radially). Why? Cheaper and last just as long as butted spokes. One can significantly reduce the effect of road impact by using a larger 28C or 32C tire. I don't see any speed penalty under normal use vs the smaller 23C. Both yielded an average speed of 15.3 mph around town (1000 miles test loop).
