Threw my chain into the wheel, wheel now out of true. . simple fix?

Last night I threw my chain into the rear wheel while going around 18 mph. By the time I stopped the chain had apparently pushed into the spokes and the wheel is out of true, noticeably. Any shortcuts to fixing just this problem or should I take it in?

Thanks

You have most likely damaged some or all of the drive side spokes that have the heads facing in and the elbows out at the hub. The right way to fix this is to replace all damaged spokes then true and tension the wheel. A simple truing will only solve your problems short term. Any damaged spokes WILL break. Take it from someone who tried this as a cheap fix before I knew anything about wheels. It is only a matter of time before this wheel will leave you stranded - I wont say unexpectedly. If you do not have the tools or knowledge to do this repair, do yourself a favor and take it to a competent person.

Proof that the "dork disc" shouldn't be laughed at.

acrafton, Actually there are two issues, the less obvious one is the reason the chain went into the spokes. There are no shortcuts, both issues need attention by either you or the LBS.

Thanks for the posts, taking it in today.

Re the Dork Disk. . .my thoughts exactly!

Re why it went into the spokes. . . I incorrectly adjusted the rear derailleur after replacing a chain. That is now fixed..
